New York City is the most populous in the U.S., with just over 8 million inhabitants. During August, Amal, a medical student from Egypt, took part in a clinical experience that allowed her to become one of these 8+ million New Yorkers for four weeks.

For details on Amal’s short-term medical training in New York, including what she learned, who she met, and the amazing food she ate, continue reading below.

A Real New Yorker

I always wondered what it would be like to work and live in New York. This year I got the chance to try it out during a clinical experience with AMO. This turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life.

During my clinical experience, I learned the basics of EKGs and how to interpret them. I also learned about spot diagnosing and the treatment course of several cases.

The best part was that the doctors were always more than happy to explain and answer any questions I had. In most cases, talking to them taught me more than what I learned while working with patients. I had the chance to observe multiple nuclear stress tests and implantable defibrillator interrogations, the results of which were kindly explained to me by the technicians and nurse practitioners. Some days I stayed on-site from morning until evening. I will admit that I enjoyed every moment of it, especially with how much I was learning. Throughout the clinical experience, I become more and more eager to understand new things as unique cases came along.

Even more than medical knowledge, I learned how to build friendships with the medical staff and patients of diverse ethnic backgrounds. These relationships made my experience fun; I was more relaxed and felt at home.

During my clinical experience, I stayed on Long Island. It took me an hour, by train, to reach New York City. It was worth taking a couple of trips there on the weekends. Manhattan was beyond amazing; I saw an Easter Island head as well as a dinosaur at the Natural History Museum. I also enjoyed the food! I ate hot dogs at Central Park and one big slice of pizza from Joe’s Pizza Place, by Times Square.

The whole rotation was an unforgettable experience, and the amount of knowledge I gained was priceless!
