With the holiday season in full motion, it can be easy to spend time compiling our wish lists and subscribing to the madness of shopping for gifts. Giving Tuesday, which is the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the U.S, could not come at a better time. This giving Tuesday we are asking for our visitors help to select an organization to donate to. For more information on what Giving Tuesday is, how it began, and the organizations you can vote for, continue reading below!
The History of Giving Tuesday
2012 saw the first celebration of this day of giving. The day was created by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation to encourage people around the world to “do good” for 24 hours. In the years since inception, Giving Tuesday has been responsible for collecting $1 billion dollars within the U.S alone. The U.S. based movement has inspired the creation of branches in 60 countries that have collected sizable charitable donations as well.

How AMO is Giving Back
In honor of giving Tuesday AMO is gifting you $50 off a clinical experience between now and Dec. 8 when you use the code AMOGIVES. For every code used AMO will donate $50 dollars to charity. What charity are we donating to? This where we need, our prospective, past, and future visitors’ help. We have selected three charities and need you to vote on which one AMO should donate to. Information on the three charities in the running can be found below.
Girl Forward
Their Cause: Supporting Refugees
How They Help: They serve girls in grades 9-12 who identify as refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. They provide mentoring programs, education programs (which include tutoring and helping increase literacy), and safe spaces where the girls can spend time after school.
Why We Picked Them: One of our company values is “think globally, act locally.” With both their headquarters and AMO’s headquarters based in Chicago, we can support a company that is truly making a difference in the lives of individuals within our community who have roots in countries around the globe.
Room to Read
Their Cause: International Education
How They Help: Their mission is to build literacy and make reading a habit among primary school children. They provide books, training for teachers, in addition to building and improving the classroom.
Why We Picked Them: This Charity has helped 16.8 million children learn to read in 60 different countries. We want to support them so they can continue this success.
Doctors without Borders
Their Cause: Accessible Global Healthcare
How They Help: They provide healthcare and emergency services to areas impacted by war, natural disasters, and epidemics. They also advocate for equal access to healthcare and medication.
Why We Picked Them: This organization is ever-evolving to meet the needs of a changing ecosystem and social climate. Doctors without Borders recently expanded their research on pollution and contamination in relation to healthcare issues.
You can vote for which charity AMO should support this Giving Tuesday on our Facebook or Instagram Stories. Voting will only be open for 24 hours on December 3rd.
