Some clinical rotations teach more than just medicine, they offer lessons in compassion, connection, and culture.
That’s what AMO visitor Camila found during her rotation at Royale Pediatric Healthcare. From working hands-on with patients to navigating the dynamics of the U.S. healthcare system, Camila walked away from her rotation with skills and experiences she’ll carry throughout her medical career.
Camila’s story earned her a spot as our June Photo and Blog winner. Read what she had to say about her experience!
Camila’s Pediatrics Rotation
My clinical experience in the United States was one of the most enriching and inspiring parts of my medical education so far. From the very first day, I felt welcomed by the staff and the doctor I worked with, who made a real effort to include me in the daily workflow and teaching moments. I participated in patient interviews, assisted with procedures like blood draws and cytology collection, and practiced preventive counseling. One of the most rewarding parts was learning how to communicate effectively with pediatric patients, especially children with autism. This helped me develop patience, empathy, and clear communication strategies that I will carry throughout my career.
Beyond clinical skills, I also learned a lot about the U.S. healthcare system, including how teamwork, documentation, and insurance influence clinical decision-making. I made friends with other international students, and we shared not only our medical journeys but also our cultures. It was amazing to connect with people from all over the world pursuing the same goal: becoming compassionate and capable physicians.
Outside the clinic, I explored the city, tried new food, and enjoyed the cultural diversity the U.S. has to offer. This experience strengthened my clinical abilities and inspired me to seek future opportunities within the U.S. healthcare system.
