According to a new study by the University of Rochester, there is a growing number of nurse practitioners providing care in low-income, rural areas. In the past 6 years, the number of nurse practitioners providing primary care doubled to 123,000 nationwide.
These trends are indicative of the growing physician shortage across the United States. By 2023, the United States is expected to see a shortage of over 120,000 physicians, especially in low-income and rural areas. With a drop in the average number of physicians, more and more nurse practitioners are filling in to serve the need.
The impending physician shortage in the United States opens the door for international medical graduates (IMGs). Without enough physicians in the country, the United States must rely on foreign medical graduates to help care for a growing population. This need is especially prevalent in rural and low-income areas across the United States.
Completing a clinical rotation with AMOpportunities is a great first step introduction to the United States healthcare system. With various specialties in different locations across the country, AMOpportunities provides 4-week long rotations. These experiences help international and foreign medical graduates experience hospital life in the United States.
