AMO visitor Mayyas discovered the importance of confidence, courage, and the ability to connect with patients during his rotation with Dr. Bahal. This rotation was an opportunity to grow as a medical professional and gain hands-on experience.
Mayyas’s story earned him a spot as our September Photo and Blog winner. Read what he had to say about his experience!
Mayyas’s Rotation Experience:
I came in as a shy student with minimal to no experience in patient interactions. I knew I wanted to develop that skill during my rotation, but I wasn’t sure I would be courageous enough. Dr. Bahal was one of a kind, and his staff was the same. They made me feel like a member of their family because the environment they created was different from any other workplace. They cared for one another and made sure the work ran smoothly for everyone.
On the second day of my rotation, Dr. Bahal told me, “I run the place now,” and that is exactly what happened. I would gather details from patients to share with Dr. Bahal before he saw them, and during that time, I had the chance to connect with them and have inspiring conversations. Before any procedure, the nurse or PA responsible would call me in to teach me about it. Through this experience, I not only gained clinical knowledge but also more courage and confidence.
I also want to mention how kind Dr. Bahal is. He introduced me to his son when he visited the clinic, and his jokes actually helped me remember important information.
Outside of the clinic, I took the opportunity to explore. I traveled around New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City. When I visited New York, I finally understood how Jay-Z and Alicia Keys described the city in their song Empire State of Mind. Walking through Brooklyn and Manhattan, I felt brand new and inspired—I even felt like I wanted to stay there forever. I visited the Statue of Liberty, met up with an old friend from my home country, and tried the delicious bagels everyone talks about.
I also visited Washington, D.C., where I had a great walk around the city. The Library of Congress was definitely a memorable highlight.
I am grateful to have lived such an experience and got to know the difference between healthcare systems among the countries I visited, the US, and my home country.
