Finding Safety and Success as an International Medical Student in the U.S.
For many international medical graduates (IMGs) and students, pursuing training in the U.S. is an exciting step in their medical journey, but it can also feel uncertain. Many students are cautious about safety, visas, and adapting to life in a new country.
Despite changing policies and global perceptions, international students continue to choose the U.S. for their clinical training. In fact, a record 9,761 international medical graduates (IMGs) secured first-year (PGY-1) residency positions in 2025, the most in history. Of those, 3,108 were U.S.-citizen IMGs and 6,653 were non-U.S.-citizen IMGs. The U.S. medical system not only welcomes international talent, it depends on it.
As Chris Glass, director of the higher education program at Boston College, notes, “I think it shows that the system is far more resilient than the tumultuous headlines would suggest.” That is apparent in students who continue to gain invaluable experiences in the U.S despite the uncertainties.
Studying in the U.S. Safely
One of the biggest concerns is remaining safe while being in the United States. Having the right visa allows students to enter the U.S. legally so they can focus fully on their clinical training with peace of mind. Through AMO, students can receive additional guidance to ensure all requirements are met.
During AMO rotations, students find themselves surrounded by supportive preceptors, welcoming hospital teams, and peers who collaborate with each other.
AMO visitor and Photo Blog Contest winner Jadryie reflected on her own experience:
“I found growth, purpose, and belonging. As a Latina woman in medicine, I felt empowered. I connected with patients, shared my culture, and proved to myself that I am capable of making a real difference. I left this rotation with new skills, unforgettable memories, and a renewed passion for medicine.”
Her words echo what so many international students discover – that safety is also about being seen, valued, and included.
At AMO, we’re proud to help international medical students arrive safely, learn confidently, and take the next step in their medical careers. We have guided thousands of students in finding their place in the U.S. healthcare system, and we’re here to support you every step of the way as you turn your dream of practicing medicine in the United States into reality.
