For future residency applicants, experiencing all that the U.S. healthcare system has to offer is important for standing out on applications. This is especially true for international medical students and graduates, like Carlos, the winner of our December Photo and Blog contest.

During his internal medicine rotation in Morristown, New Jersey, Carlos found a passionate preceptor in Dr. L who helped Carlos dive into an experience of the U.S. healthcare system that touched on a little bit of everything it has to offer.

Read what Carlos had to say about his experience below!

A Full Experience of the U.S. Healthcare System

I am grateful to be able to have had this amazing experience! It was so much fun, and Morristown it’s a nice area with great restaurants and great people.

Doctor L. helped me improve my medical knowledge, clinical skills, taking patient histories, and he even showed me physical examination tricks and tips. Those details make the difference. I was also able to get to know the electronic medical record and be familiar with the U.S. healthcare system.

The part of the rotation that I liked the most was being part of the differential diagnosis and being able to give my thoughts on the diagnosis and the management of different patients. Doctor L. always was reassuring. His love and his passion for teaching speak for themselves. Overall it was a great experience, and I cannot wait to come back and visit the again. I will always keep the advice and lessons from Doctor L. and Doctor R.
