A lot has been written about why virtual rotations are important for future healthcare workers. While this may be reason enough to consider one, virtual rotations have plenty of other benefits.

In this post, we’ll dive into the other reasons why it just makes sense to choose a virtual clinical rotation.

Stronger Letters of Recommendation

One of the most unassuming benefits of virtual clinical rotations is that you’ll find you have more face-to-face time with your preceptor than with an in-person rotation. Group differential diagnosis discussions over zoom put you directly in front of your preceptor, allowing him/her to directly assess your knowledge and skills. As well, designated meeting times give you the opportunity to meet individually with your preceptor to discuss your goals and how you’re progressing toward them.

Save Money

Virtual rotations are, on average, slightly less expensive than in-person rotations. However, the real cost savings come with the costs that come with traveling for in-person rotations.

Housing and transportation costs quickly add up, especially in a country like the U.S. where public transportation is not readily available outside of large cities. Virtual clinical rotations allow you to rotate from anywhere in the world. This could be your home country or somewhere you may be visiting on holiday.

Flexible Scheduling (with certain virtual clinical rotations)

Beyond the option to rotate from anywhere in the world, certain virtual clinical experiences allow you to work around your own schedule. Whether you’re a student or working full-time, flexible virtual rotations allow you to fit medical training into your life.

While not all virtual rotations offer flexible scheduling, the ones that do give you more agency in determining your schedule. You’ll be able to select from a number of predetermined days and times in order to build your own rotation schedule.

Flexible virtual rotations are especially helpful for trainees who might face significant time zone differences.
